Conservation of turtles
Seven species of turtles which have been included into the Red List, live around the world and out of that 7, five species of turtles can be seen in the seas around Sri Lanka. As a supportive measure in the effort of Sri Lankan government to preserve this rare creature of turtles, several turtle conservation projects are being conducted by Sri Lanka Navy under the directives of Commander of the Navy and the head of the Maritime and Eco Friendly Committee Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva.
In all the beach areas where the turtles lay eggs, turtle conservation projects are being operated by Sri Lanka Navy. Specially, Navy has spotted Southern, Eastern and Southeastern beaches as the places which are widely used by turtles for their egg laying process. During the period of last two years, SL Navy had released nearly 7000 cubs of turtles after they were conserved for few weeks in their hatcheries.
