Breaking the Threshold Sky is the Limit
Deploying women at sea is not a new ideology, most of the countries encourage deploying
more females to work at sea. In the same way, Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) took initiative to deploy lady
officers and women sailors for duties at sea. It has successfully been activated as the lady officers
and women sailors willingly cooperated with the duties at sea and now the mission has already been
accomplished. Truly this new trend definitely will bring prospective outcomes in the future and it
will be a great remedy for many future challenges.
Bringing this ideology into practice, Inshore Patrol Craft (IPC) Handling Foundation Course
was arranged for the lady officers and women sailors of the SLN concluded on a successful note in Trincomalee. These lady officers and women
sailors sharpened their practical and theoretical knowledge through this course module. Two VNF Lady Officers and Five Women Sailors
successfully completed the IPC Handling Foundation Course, which was conducted at the Naval & Maritime Academy. Overcoming the gender
discrimination, this initiative has given the opportunity to the Navy women who are willing
to serve onboard ships and craft, which has been a duty solely operated by men so far.
Due to an initiative of present Commander
of the Navy Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera,
Lady Officers and women sailors of the Sri Lanka
Volunteer Naval Force (SLVNF) have the
opportunity to serve onboard ships and craft
and also to obtain the Watch Keeping
certificate during their naval career. SLN embraces
the inclusion of women in sea duties to expect to
reap the benefits of this inclusive and diverse approach to national defence in the time to come.
Deploying them, onboard ships and craft is a great advantage through which positive outcomes can be bestowed to their
personnel lives and to the SLN as a whole.
