The stereotype of the less educated, naive, but resilient sailor is now a thing of the past. The average recruit of today is decently educated, aware, ambitious, and often more cognizant of his rights than obligations. Applications are now being called for both Artificer and Non-Artificer tracks.

Training Tracks Setup
Basic training of about 6 months is conducted at Advanced Naval Training Centre (Nipuna), Naval Recruit Training Centre (Shiksha), SLNS Gemunu (Welisara), SLNS Ruhuna (Tangalle) and SLNS Vijaya (Kalpitiya). Followed by dedicated "on-the-job" training cycles (both ashore & afloat) and sub-specialization units lasting 6 to 12 months.
On completion of 3 to 6 months of basic training, Artificer training is provided either locally or abroad, which will confer a Diploma in Naval Engineering in the specified fields to those who successfully complete this training.
Training Pathways & Locations
It is a golden opportunity for all young Sri Lankans to be an officer and a gentleman/lady of high calibre, capable and innovative in a challenging seafaring career. Presently officer training is mainly conducted at the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) Trincomalee and short/specialised officer training is conducted at the Sri Lanka Naval Ship Gemunu, Welisara. This training includes theoretical aspects covered at the training institute followed by practical exposure onboard the Sri Lanka Navy fleet at sea.
Sailors' basic training (approximately six months) is conducted at Advanced Naval Training Centre (Nipuna), Naval Recruit Training Centre (Shiksha), SLNS Gemunu (Welisara), SLNS Ruhuna (Tangalle) and SLNS Vijaya (Kalpitiya). This basic training will be followed by "on-the-job" training onboard fleet units and at shore establishments.

Officer Cadet Vacancies (2026)
Applications are now being called for Officer Cadet vacancies of the Regular Force of Sri Lanka Navy from school leavers who have successfully passed the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination, obtaining the minimum requirement for university entrance.
Sailors Enlistment (Artificer & Non-Artificer)
Vacancies exist for Artificers in the Artificer (Direct Entry) Branches of the Sri Lanka Regular Naval Force. Applications are called from male candidates possessing the relevant qualifications.
