GLOSSARY
Littoral
The littoral comprises two segments of the operational environment: 1. Seaward:
the area from the open ocean to the shore, which must be controlled to support
operations ashore. 2. Landward: the area inland from the shore that can be supported
and defended directly from the sea.
Littoral Countries
Countries which are in the littoral zone or near shore. Littoral zone is the part of
a sea, lake, or river that is close to the shore. In coastal environments, the littoral zone
extends from the high water mark, which is rarely inundated, to shoreline areas that
are permanently submerged.
Logistics
Planning and executing the movement and support of forces. In its most comprehensive
sense, the aspects of military operations which deal with: design and development,
acquisition, storage, movement, distribution, maintenance, recovery and disposal of
materiel; transport of personnel; acquisition or construction, maintenance, operation
and disposition of facilities; acquisition or furnishing of services; medical and health
service support.
Loyalty
Loyalty is being committed to each other and to the duty of service to the country.
Main Effort
The Main Effort is what the commander considers to be the activity which is crucial to
the success of the mission.
Major Vessels
Vessels which are designed to operate independently in most navigable areas of
regional/ extra regional oceans. They are capable to operate extended periods at
sea by replenishing supplies including fuel, water, provisions and ammunition while
underway.
